Ancud sits at the northern end of Chiloé Island in southern Chile, on a bay that opens towards the Chacao Channel and the Pacific. The town climbs steep ground above the water, and its map shows streets bending around hills, with a denser grid near the waterfront and looser roads higher up.
The coastline is the dominant line on the map. The bay's curving edge, small headlands and river mouths frame the town, and beyond it the island's shore breaks into coves and inlets. Roads lead inland across rolling, green countryside dotted with farms and patches of native forest.
Ancud was founded in the eighteenth century as a Spanish fortified settlement, and the remains of Fuerte San Antonio still overlook the bay.
