Antigua Guatemala sits in a highland valley in the department of Sacatepéquez, and its centre is one of the clearest Spanish colonial grids in the Americas. Streets run in straight lines north to south and east to west, forming regular blocks around the Parque Central. The grid ends quite abruptly at the edges of the valley, where fields and slopes begin.
The city was the capital of the Captaincy General of Guatemala until a series of earthquakes in 1773 led to the capital being moved to what is now Guatemala City. Many churches and convents were left in ruins, and the preserved city is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Three volcanoes surround the valley: Agua, Fuego and Acatenango.
