Anūpshahr is in the Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh, on the western bank of the Ganges. The river defines the town's shape. The older quarter runs down to the water in a dense tangle of lanes, and steps and ghats line the bank. From above, the broad, braided river with its sandbanks takes up much of the frame beside the compact town.
The ghats make the town a place of pilgrimage and ritual bathing, especially during religious festivals when many visitors come to the river. Away from the water, newer streets and main roads spread inland toward the rest of the district, and the pattern opens into farmland across the flat Doab plain.
