Aqaba sits at the northern tip of the Gulf of Aqaba, on Jordan's short stretch of Red Sea coastline. From above, the city spreads in a broad band between the shore and the granite mountains that rise sharply behind it. The border with Israel and the town of Eilat lie just to the west, and the coast runs south toward Saudi Arabia.
The old town centre is near the Mamluk-era Aqaba Fort, which was captured in 1917 during the Arab Revolt, an episode later made famous by the film Lawrence of Arabia. Today the city is Jordan's main port, and the coral reefs along its southern coast make it a well-known destination for diving and snorkelling.

Near the waterfront, the older streets gather around Aqaba Fort and the main corniche. It is the historic heart of the city.
Southern coast
Port terminals, beaches and reef areas stretch south along a narrow coastal strip toward the Saudi border, forming a long, thin line on the map.
