Arnold lies just north of Nottingham and is the largest town in the borough of Gedling. On a map it continues the city's suburbs and then gradually loosens into open country, with the A60 Mansfield Road running north as its spine. Housing estates cover the gentler ground on either side, and their curving closes contrast with the straighter, older streets near the centre.
The town has a notable place in English social history. The Luddite protests of 1811, when framework knitters broke the machines that threatened their trade, are widely traced to Arnold. Hosiery and knitting drove the town's growth through the nineteenth century, and the terraces from that period still show as a tighter grain of streets around the centre.
An Arnold map poster frames a place where town and green belt meet. Arnot Hill Park lies close to the centre, and the wooded rises of Bestwood Country Park lie to the west. In black and white the pattern moves from dense terraces to looping estates to the soft blank of fields, tracing a knitting village that grew into a suburban town.
