Ashton lies in the Breede River valley of the Western Cape, at the start of the stretch of Route 62 that heads east toward Montagu. Behind the town rise the Langeberg mountains, and the valley floor around it is a patchwork of vineyards and fruit orchards. On a map, the town is a compact grid of streets with farmland crowding close on every side.
Fruit processing has long shaped Ashton, and the town is known for its large canning industry, one of the main employers in the valley. Just east of town the road enters Cogmanskloof, a narrow pass through the mountains toward Montagu that includes a short tunnel through a rock ridge. The Kingna River follows the same gap before joining the Breede nearby.
