Asti lies in the hills of Piedmont, on the plain of the Tanaro River, surrounded by the vineyards of the Monferrato and the Langhe-Roero area. On the map the historic centre is long and narrow, organised along Corso Alfieri, the main street that crosses the old town from east to west. The river passes to the south, with the railway and newer districts filling the space between.
In the Middle Ages Asti was a wealthy commune, and its merchant families built dozens of tower houses, earning it the name city of a hundred towers. Several still stand. The town is also known for the Palio di Asti, a bareback horse race run each September, and for the sparkling white wine that carries its name. The poet Vittorio Alfieri was born here.

The river curves along the southern side of the city, with bridges and embankments marking the boundary between the town and the flat valley floor beyond.
