Asunción lies on the eastern bank of the Paraguay River, where a wide bay curves into the shore. Founded in 1537, it is one of the oldest cities in South America, and its historic centre still follows a grid that runs down to the water near the presidential palace. From there, the city spreads east and south across gentle hills.
Across the river begins the flat, sparsely populated Gran Chaco, and on the map the contrast between the dense city and the open land to the west is striking. The Costanera, a waterfront avenue built along the bay, traces the edge of the centre, while the Palacio de los López overlooks the river at the corner of the old town.
