Auerbach lies in the Vogtland, in the southwest of Saxony, on slopes above the valley of the Göltzsch. From above, the town is a web of streets that climb and bend with the hillside, far from any regular grid. The old centre sits on higher ground, with later districts spreading down towards the river and out along the valley.
Around the town, the Vogtland's rolling hills are a mix of forest, meadow and farmland, with small villages linked by winding roads. The Göltzsch runs through the valley in gentle curves, and the railway and main roads follow it. Woods close in on several sides, giving the map a strong green frame.
Auerbach is known as the town of three towers, after the church towers and castle tower that stand out on its skyline.
