Augustów lies in the Podlasie region of northeastern Poland, surrounded by the lakes and woodland of the Augustów Forest. The town was founded in the sixteenth century and named after King Sigismund II Augustus. Its compact centre, built around a spacious market square, sits on a narrow stretch of land between lakes, with water visible on almost every side of the map.
The defining feature is the Augustów Canal, a nineteenth-century waterway built to link the Vistula and Neman basins, which continues across the border into Belarus. Its locks and straight sections cut through the landscape, joining rivers and lakes along the way. From above, the town reads as a band of streets threaded between water and forest.
