Awsīm lies in Giza Governorate, northwest of Cairo, on the western edge of the Nile Delta. From above, the town is a dense cluster of buildings and narrow streets surrounded by a fine patchwork of irrigated fields and canals. To the west, the green of the cultivated land gives way to desert. The boundary is sharp and easy to see from above.
The site has a very long history. In ancient times it was Letopolis, known in Egyptian as Khem, a cult centre of the god Horus and the capital of one of the nomes, or provinces, of Lower Egypt. Today Awsīm is an agricultural and market town that is being drawn more and more into the growth of Greater Cairo, with new buildings spreading along the main roads.
