Bačka Palanka lies on the left bank of the Danube in southern Bačka, facing the Croatian town of Ilok across the water. From above, the town runs along the river in a long band, with streets laid parallel and perpendicular to the bank. A bridge connects the two shores, and beyond the built area the flat Pannonian plain opens into wide fields.
The town grew from several neighbouring settlements that eventually merged, and you can still see this in the way separate street networks meet along the main road. At the edge of town, Tikvara lake and its woodland form a green, curving pocket between the houses and the river. The lake is a former arm of the Danube and is now a recreation area.
