Bafilo lies in the hilly country of Togo's Kara region, where the Atakora range crosses the country from southwest to northeast. On a map the town is shaped by its terrain. Streets follow the lie of the land rather than a strict grid, and the main national road passes nearby on its way between the south of the country and the north.
The town is known for its long-established Muslim community and its mosque, and for traditional crafts, especially woven cloth. The road through the hills near Bafilo cuts through a rocky pass, one of the more dramatic stretches of the route north.
