Balykchy sits at the western end of Issyk-Kul, the large high-altitude lake in north-eastern Kyrgyzstan. The town, formerly called Rybachye, grew as a fishing and transport centre, and it is the eastern end of the railway line from Bishkek, which gives it a role as the gateway to the lake.
On the map, the shoreline is the strongest element. The town is laid out in a regular grid along the curving western shore, and the open water spreads away eastward. Dry hills and the ranges of the Tian Shan rise behind the town and along both sides of the lake.
