Barren Island Map Poster & Print
Barren Island lies in the Andaman Sea, east of the main Andaman Islands, and is the only confirmed active volcano in South Asia. On a map it is nearly circular. A ring of steep outer slopes encloses a caldera that opens to the sea on the western side. A newer cone rises in the middle, and the island's eruptions come from it.
Eruptions were recorded in the late eighteenth century. After a long quiet period, activity resumed in 1991, and more eruptions followed in later years. Lava flows have reached the western shore through the gap in the caldera wall and reshaped that coast. Apart from feral goats and other wildlife, the island is uninhabited, and landing is restricted.
