Barrie sits at the western end of Kempenfelt Bay, a long arm of Lake Simcoe about an hour's drive north of Toronto. The bay gives the city its defining shape from above: a deep, narrow sheet of water with the downtown at its head and neighbourhoods climbing the slopes on both the north and south shores. Streets follow the curve of the waterfront before settling into a grid.
The shoreline is lined almost continuously with parks and trails, so the water's edge appears on the map as an open band rather than a row of buildings. Highway 400, the main route between Toronto and cottage country, passes through the city and carries a steady flow of summer traffic. In winter, the frozen bay is a well-known destination for ice fishing.
