Basankusu is a town in Équateur province in the north-west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It stands at the confluence of the Lopori and Maringa rivers, which join here to form the Lulonga, a tributary that eventually flows into the Congo River. From above, water is the dominant feature, framing the town on several sides.
The built-up area is modest: a set of streets and plots gathered along the riverbanks, with roads and tracks leading inland into the surrounding forest. Beyond the town, the map is mostly occupied by the rainforest of the central Congo Basin, crossed by winding rivers and the occasional path or clearing.
