Batī lies in the Amhara region of Ethiopia, on the eastern escarpment where the highlands begin their long descent toward the Afar lowlands. On a map the town sits on uneven ground, with streets bending to follow the slopes and a main road winding in from the highlands and continuing down toward the plains to the east.
The town is best known for its weekly Monday market, one of the largest in the region, where Afar, Oromo and Amhara traders meet to exchange livestock, grain and goods. The market grounds and the roads leading into them are an important part of the town's structure, as people and animals arrive from both the highlands and the lowlands.
