Beaufort sits on the Padas River in the southwest of Sabah, in Malaysian Borneo. The town grew on low ground inside a bend of the river. On the map, the Padas is the dominant feature. It is a broad, winding band of water with a small grid of streets tucked beside it and wetland and plantation land spreading beyond.
The town is named after Leicester Paul Beaufort, a governor of British North Borneo. It is known as a stop on the Sabah State Railway, which follows the river inland toward Tenom through the Padas gorge. Because the land is so low, Beaufort has a long history of flooding. Older buildings were raised on stilts to deal with it, and this still shows in the townscape.
A Beaufort map poster is really a portrait of a river. The rail line and roads follow its curves, bridges cross it at a few points, and the street grid sits between water and track. Around the town, the map opens into a flat, marshy landscape crossed by channels and scattered roads.

The Sabah State Railway runs along the river through Beaufort toward Tenom. On the map it shows as a long, steady line that follows the curves of the water.
