Bečej is on the Tisa river in the Bačka region of Vojvodina, directly across the water from Novi Bečej. The land around it is almost perfectly flat, and the map reflects that. Long straight roads, rectangular fields and a town plan that spreads out comfortably into the plain, with no need to climb or crowd, give it an open, horizontal feel.
The Great Bačka Canal, part of the wider Danube–Tisa–Danube canal system, runs to the town and joins the Tisa there, so the map is framed by water on more than one side. In the centre, broad streets and a main square with churches of different denominations reflect the town's mixed Hungarian and Serbian population.
A short drive away stands Fantast, a manor built for the Dunđerski family among open farmland and horse paddocks.
