Bedugul lies in the mountains of central Bali, inside an old volcanic landscape, and the map is dominated by water. Lake Bratan fills much of the frame, its shoreline curving against steep, forested slopes. Roads are few and follow the contours, winding up from the lowlands and along the lake before climbing again toward the north coast. The settlement itself hugs the shore and the main road.
Beyond Bratan, the neighbouring lakes Buyan and Tamblingan lie to the north-west, forming a chain of basins that reads beautifully in black and white. On the edge of Lake Bratan stands Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, the water temple whose shrines appear to float on the lake and which is one of the most photographed sites in Bali.
A Bedugul map poster captures a very different Bali from the beaches and rice terraces of the south. Here the island is cool, green and high, and the map reflects that with broad blank lake surfaces, tight road bends and patches of market gardens. The Bali Botanic Garden spreads across the slopes nearby, adding a large area of planted parkland to the composition.

Buyan and Tamblingan sit just north-west of Bratan, together forming a line of three lakes inside the old volcanic landscape.
Mountain road
The main road snakes along the lake and over the ridges in tight bends, the principal route linking southern Bali to the north coast.
