Belton is the county seat of Bell County in Central Texas, and its map has a clear centre: a small downtown grid around the county courthouse square. From there the streets spread out in older, regular blocks before loosening into newer subdivisions. Nolan Creek cuts through town in a meandering line, and the Leon River passes to the south, giving the map its natural curves.
Interstate 35 runs along the eastern side of town as a long, straight corridor, a strong contrast to the creek's bends. To the northwest, the reservoir of Belton Lake opens into a wide, branching shape with many fingers of water reaching into the surrounding land. The town is also home to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, whose campus forms its own tidy block near the centre.
