Benito Juárez is the seat of the partido of the same name in the south of Buenos Aires Province. It follows the classic plan of the Argentine pampas: a regular chequerboard of square blocks built around a central plaza, with diagonal and radial roads stretching out across flat agricultural land. The town takes its name from Benito Juárez, the nineteenth-century Mexican president, which is unusual among the region's place names.
Viewed from above, the grid is the whole story. It is unusually tidy, with blocks of equal size and avenues that mark out the core. Beyond them, the plan breaks into large rectangular fields, and rural roads run straight to the horizon. Low hills of the Tandilia system rise in the wider region and interrupt the flatness, but the town itself sits on open plain.
