Beppu is one of Japan's best-known hot-spring towns, stretched along the western shore of Beppu Bay in Oita Prefecture. The city covers a broad slope that rises from the water toward Mount Tsurumi and other volcanic peaks. On a map the streets fan out across this incline, dense near the coast and thinning as the ground climbs.
The flat strip by the sea holds the station, the shopping arcades and a regular grid of blocks, and the shoreline is drawn as a long, gentle curve. Higher up, districts such as Kannawa follow winding roads. This is where the steam vents and the famous hot pools called the hells, or jigoku, are concentrated.
Several streams run straight down the slope to the bay, dividing the city into long, narrow sections, and a university campus sits on the heights above it all.
