Biella sits where the Piedmont plain meets the first ridges of the Alps, and its map shows that transition clearly. The town is divided into two levels: Biella Piano, the lower town spreading across flatter ground, and Biella Piazzo, the medieval upper quarter on a hill above it. A funicular links the two, a short straight line climbing across the slope.
The Cervo river runs along the edge of the town in a narrow valley, and streams descending from the mountains cut further lines through the surrounding land. Many former textile mills sit along these waterways, a reminder that water power made Biella one of Italy's leading centres of wool production, a reputation the area still holds today.
To the north, roads wind up into the valleys toward the Sanctuary of Oropa, a major pilgrimage site in the mountains above the town.
