Birecik lies on the east bank of the Euphrates in Şanlıurfa Province. The river is the defining feature here. It is wide and slow, and since the construction of the Birecik Dam upstream, parts of the valley have been flooded. The town climbs from the water up onto the limestone slopes behind it.
A castle ruin stands on a rocky outcrop above the river and marks the ancient crossing point that gave the town its importance. A long bridge carries the main highway across the Euphrates. Birecik is also known for its breeding station for the northern bald ibis, one of the world's rarest birds.
