Blankenburg lies on the northern edge of the Harz mountains in Saxony-Anhalt, where wooded slopes drop down to the open farmland of the Harz foreland. The town rises from its lower streets up to the Großes Schloss, the castle that dominates its southern side, and the map shows streets bending around the hillside in curves that follow the terrain.
Beneath the castle, the Kleines Schloss and its terraced baroque gardens form an unusually ordered patch within the old town, a legacy of the period when Blankenburg served as a residence of the dukes of Brunswick. Just outside town, the Regenstein castle ruins are cut into a sandstone outcrop, and the Teufelsmauer, the Devil's Wall, runs across the landscape as a line of jagged rock.
