Bonāb sits on the broad plain that runs down from the hills of East Azerbaijan toward the eastern side of Lake Urmia. From above, the town forms a dense core of streets with blocks that grow looser toward the edges. Beyond them, a patchwork of fields and orchard plots stretches out, divided by lanes and irrigation lines.
The lake shapes the region even where it is not on the map. Toward the west the ground stays low and open, and the farmland thins into the flats that surround the water. On the other sides, roads link Bonāb to the nearby towns of the plain. Printed in plain linework, the pattern reads as a small market centre ringed by cultivated land.
Across Iran the town is best known for kabab Bonabi, a style of grilled minced meat named after it and served well beyond the province.
