Bondo sits on the Uele River in the Bas-Uele province of northern DR Congo. From above, the river is the defining feature: a broad, curving band with the town arranged along one bank. Streets and paths spread inland from the water, and beyond them the map opens into forest and savanna, crossed by only a few roads leading toward other towns in the region.
The Uele has long been a route for trade and travel in this part of Central Africa, and Bondo developed as an administrative and market centre along it. The forests of the wider Bas-Uele area have attracted researchers studying chimpanzees, which brought the region some international attention in recent decades.
