Bordj el Bahri lies at the eastern end of the Bay of Algiers, looking back across the water toward the capital. Its name means roughly fort of the sea. In the colonial period the area was known by the name of the nearby cape, Cap Matifou. On a map, the coastline is the defining feature: a long edge of beach and rock that the town meets directly.
Behind the shore, the commune has grown into a mix of older quarters and newer housing estates. The streets follow a broadly regular pattern that runs back from the sea. Main roads connect it to the neighbouring coastal communes and to the wider Algiers road network. Toward the headland, the built-up area thins and the shape of the coast becomes more pronounced.
