Bornheim lies in North Rhine-Westphalia, stretched between Bonn and Cologne. It is less one centre than a chain of villages along the Vorgebirge, a low ridge that falls gently eastward to the Rhine. On a map, the settlements line up along roads that follow the slope. Fields and greenhouses fill the gaps, and the river closes off the eastern side.
The Vorgebirge has long been a market-garden landscape. Bornheim is associated with vegetables, fruit and especially asparagus grown on the light soils of the slope. Rail and road links to both neighbouring cities cross the town from north to south, and its riverside districts face the Rhine directly.
