Boukoumbé lies in the Atakora department of northwestern Benin, close to the border with Togo and among the hills of the Atakora range. The town is small and informally laid out. From above it looks like a cluster of streets and compounds where roads cross, with open savanna and farmland all around.
The area is home to the Batammariba people, known for the tata, two-storey earthen tower houses built as fortified family homes. Across the border in Togo, the same landscape, known as Koutammakou, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the Benin side, the tata remain a strong part of local identity.
