Braga lies in the Minho region of northern Portugal, in a valley drained by the small Este River and ringed by green hills. From above, the historic centre forms a compact cluster of streets and squares around the cathedral, surrounded by later neighbourhoods and modern ring roads. To the east the land climbs steeply toward the wooded slopes of Bom Jesus and Sameiro.
Founded by the Romans as Bracara Augusta, Braga later became the seat of powerful archbishops and is often called the city of archbishops. Its cathedral is among the oldest in Portugal, and the Baroque sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, with its zigzag staircase climbing the hillside, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019.
