Bristol takes up a peninsula on the east side of Narragansett Bay, with Bristol Harbor to the west and Mount Hope Bay to the east. On a map the town is tightly defined by water. A compact colonial grid lines the harbour, Hope Street runs north to south as its spine, and the land narrows toward Bristol Point and the Mount Hope Bridge.
The town is known for holding the oldest continuous Fourth of July celebration in the United States, dating back to 1785. The centre line of Hope Street is painted red, white and blue all year. Bristol was also home to the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company, which built several America's Cup defenders along this waterfront.
