Brunswick sits on the south bank of the Androscoggin River in Maine, a short distance from the coast. The river drops over falls at the north end of town, and Brunswick grew up around the mills built there. From above, Maine Street is the clear spine. It is unusually wide, running south from the river past shops, churches and houses to the Bowdoin College campus.
Bowdoin, founded in 1794, gives the south end of town its open quadrangle and scattered academic buildings. Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin while living in Brunswick, where her husband taught at the college. To the east, the former naval air station has become a large grid of runways and new development. South of town, the land breaks into the long peninsulas and inlets of Casco Bay's northern shore.
