Buni lies in the Chitral valley in the far north of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and its shape on the map comes straight from the mountains around it. Settlement follows a strip of flatter land beside the river, so the town is long and thin, with the main road running parallel to the water and fields filling the terrace between them.
The town is the administrative centre of Upper Chitral District, set among some of the highest ranges of the Hindu Kush. Beyond the valley floor the map empties quickly. Contours steepen, tracks become rare, and the few lines that remain lead up side valleys toward villages higher in the mountains.
