Bunia sits on a high plateau in Ituri province, in the far northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with the escarpment down to Lake Albert and the Ugandan border lying to the east. On a map the city appears as a spreading network of roads and neighbourhoods across gently rolling ground, with farmland pressing in at the edges.
As the capital of Ituri, Bunia is the administrative and commercial hub of a region known for its gold deposits and fertile highland farming. The city has grown quickly in recent decades, drawing people from the surrounding countryside, and it hosts regional offices of many humanitarian and international organisations working in eastern Congo.
