Bytów lies in the Kashubian lake district of Pomerania, in northern Poland. Its best-known landmark is the castle built by the Teutonic Knights in the late fourteenth century, a large brick fortress on a rise above the river valley. On the map the castle's rectangular footprint stands out clearly, with the old town streets gathered next to it on the higher ground.
Small rivers wind through and around the town, and the land rolls in the way typical of Kashubia, so streets bend to follow slopes and valleys. Beyond the centre, residential areas and green spaces spread out, and around them forests and lakes begin quickly. Bytów is also an important centre of Kashubian culture, which gives the town a strong regional identity.

Small rivers wind through the town in green valleys. Streets and paths follow their curves, so the plan has a soft, flowing edge instead of a rigid grid.
Lakes and forest
Beyond the built-up area, lakes and woodland of the Kashubian countryside begin almost at once, and they frame the town in wide pale shapes at the edges of the map.
