Calatayud lies in western Aragon where the Jalón river valley narrows between dry hills. The old town sits at the foot of a ridge crowned by a series of Moorish fortifications, and its streets climb and twist toward them. The town's name comes from the Arabic Qal'at Ayyub, the fortress of Ayyub.
Below the old quarter, the river and the main roads run through the valley, and newer districts extend along them. The Mudéjar tower and apse of the Collegiate Church of Santa María form part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Mudéjar architecture of Aragon. Nearby lie the remains of Roman Bilbilis, birthplace of the poet Martial.
