Cali occupies the flat floor of the Cauca Valley where it meets the foothills of Colombia's Western Cordillera, and the map is shaped by that meeting. The city is elongated north to south, pressed against slopes on its western side, where streets begin to curve and climb, and opening out on the east toward the Cauca River and the sugar-cane plains beyond.
The Cali River descends from the mountains and crosses the historic centre, a green thread lined with a riverside boulevard. Around the old core near the Plaza de Caicedo the blocks are small and regular, while newer districts to the south spread along broad avenues that run parallel to the valley. On the western hills, the Cristo Rey statue and the Cerro de las Tres Cruces overlook the grid.
Cali is widely known as a world capital of salsa, with dance schools, clubs and the Feria de Cali, a festival held at the end of each year. A Cali map poster shows how that reputation fits into a clear geography: a narrow city held between the Cordillera and the river.
