Calp lies on the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante, and its map is dominated by the Penyal d'Ifac, a huge limestone rock joined to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. The rock rises sharply from the sea and gives the town a landmark visible from far along the coast. On the map it forms a bold, compact shape reaching into the Mediterranean.
Between the old town and the seafront lies a shallow salt lagoon, Les Salines, a wetland where flamingos are often seen. The historic centre occupies higher ground inland, with narrow streets and traces of old walls. Modern apartment blocks and hotels line the beaches on either side of the rock, spread along the waterfront.
