From above it reads as a compact core of streets gathered around a few main roads, with the built area loosening quickly into fields, garden plots and footpaths. The surrounding country is open and rolling, and the outline of the town is shaped more by the land than by any strict plan.
The town is widely known for its long-established mission hospital, which draws patients from well beyond Caluquembe and has made the name familiar across the region. Around it the town grew as a service centre for the farming communities of the plateau, where seasonal rains set the rhythm of the year and most families still work the land around their homes.
