Caojie is a town in Hechuan District, in the northern part of Chongqing Municipality, set in the hilly country where the Jialing River runs south toward its meeting with the Yangtze. On a map, the built area follows the lie of the land rather than a grid, with streets bending along slopes and gathering close to the river.
The Jialing is the defining feature here. Its broad channel loops through the landscape, and the town gives its name to a large navigation and hydropower project on the river. Around the settlement, the terrain breaks into small valleys and ridges, with roads tracing the contours between farmland and villages.
A Caojie map poster renders all of this in clean black lines: the curve of the river, the irregular streets of the town and the fine threads of roads climbing through the hills.
