Cape Breton Island forms the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, and its map is defined by water in the middle rather than at the edges. The Bras d'Or Lake, a large inland sea of salt water, fills the centre and branches into long arms that almost divide the island in two. Roads and villages follow its shores as closely as they follow the Atlantic coast.
The northern half rises into the Cape Breton Highlands, a high plateau cut by steep river valleys, part of which is protected as a national park. The Cabot Trail loops around it, hugging the coast on both sides with long switchbacks. In the southwest, the Canso Causeway, opened in 1955, connects the island to the mainland across the Strait of Canso.
Sydney, the largest community, sits by a harbour on the east side, surrounded by former coal and steel towns. On the southeast coast, the Fortress of Louisbourg has been partly rebuilt as it stood in the eighteenth century. Baddeck, on the lake, was the summer home of Alexander Graham Bell. Cabot Trail
A scenic road around the northern highlands that rises and falls along cliffs on both the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Atlantic sides. On the poster it traces a clean loop around the empty plateau.
Canso Causeway
A rock-filled causeway across the Strait of Canso, completed in 1955. It is the short, straight line that joins the island to the rest of Nova Scotia.
