Chalisgaon sits in the Khandesh region of northern Maharashtra, among farmland at the foot of the Sahyadri spurs. Two long lines shape it on the map: the Titur River, winding through the town, and the railway, crossing it on a straighter course. The streets, markets and residential lanes are packed around these two features, which gives the plan a strong structure.
The railway explains much of the town's role. Chalisgaon is a junction on the main line between Mumbai and Bhusawal, and a branch runs south toward Dhule. On the map the tracks look like a firm stroke through the softer pattern of the streets. Next to them, the winding river adds a natural curve.
