Chalkída is built where the island of Euboea comes closest to the Greek mainland. On a map, the land on either side nearly meets, and the city spreads along both shores of the Euripus Strait, with its older, denser part on the island side. Waterfront roads trace the edges, and the water between them narrows to a thin channel at the centre of town.
The Euripus is known for its unusual currents, which reverse direction several times a day. The phenomenon has puzzled observers since antiquity, and a well-known legend links it to Aristotle. Today the narrows are crossed by a low bridge that can slide open for boats, while a larger high bridge spans the strait further south.
A Chalkída map poster centres on that narrow gap of water. Few city maps have such a clear focal point: two coastlines leaning toward each other, the streets gathering on both sides, and the open gulfs spreading north and south. In black and white, the strait becomes a simple, graphic pause in the middle of the city.

The small sliding bridge at the narrows and the high bridge to the south both appear on the map, marking the two main links between Euboea and the mainland.

Seafront roads follow the coastline on both sides. Their curves frame the dense street pattern of the old town and give the composition a clean, flowing outline.
