Chamonix fills the floor of a deep, straight valley, and its map follows the Arve river from the southwest toward the Swiss border. The town centre sits where the valley is widest, with a web of older streets around the church and the river, and then a line of hamlets such as Les Praz and Argentière continues upstream. On both sides the contour lines crowd in steeply.
The valley's place in mountaineering history is long: Mont Blanc was first climbed from here in 1786, and Chamonix hosted the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924. The Aiguille du Midi cable car lifts visitors from the edge of town to close to 3,800 metres, and the Mont Blanc Tunnel, opened in 1965, runs from the valley's southern end into Italy.

The cable car starts at the southern edge of town and climbs in two stages to a rock needle high above the valley, one of the highest lift-served viewpoints in Europe.

Beyond the centre, Les Praz, Les Tines and Argentière appear as small separate clusters along the river, each a short knot of streets gathered around the road and the railway.
