Changshu Map Poster & Print
Changshu is a county-level city in southern Jiangsu, and its map is defined by water and a single hill. Yushan, a long, low ridge, runs from the countryside into the north-west of the old town. A local saying describes seven streams flowing to the sea and ten li of green hills half inside the city. Canals still run through the historic core.
Beyond the old town, Shanghu Lake lies south-west of Yushan, a broad stretch of water that anchors the western side of the map. Newer districts spread east and south in a more regular pattern of wide roads. To the north the land reaches the Yangtze, which is several kilometres wide here. The Sutong cable-stayed bridge crosses the river from Changshu toward Nantong.
A Changshu map poster suits someone who knows the city on its own terms, not only as part of Suzhou, which it belongs to administratively. The town has long been a centre of scholarship and gave its name to the Yushan schools of painting and qin music. A large lake south-west of the hill forms an open body of water on the map. Its shoreline curves against fields, roads and the newer edges of the city.
Canal network
Waterways run through the historic core and out across the surrounding plain, as in the other water towns of the Jiangnan region. The poster draws them as fine, winding lines.
