Chaniá lies on the northwest coast of Crete, facing the Aegean. On a map the old harbour is instantly recognisable. It is a crescent of quays closed by a long breakwater ending at a lighthouse. Behind it, the old town forms a tight knot of narrow lanes, partly enclosed by the remains of Venetian walls and bastions. Newer districts spread out from there along the coast and inland.
The city's layers are visible in its plan. The hill of Kastelli, above the harbour, was settled in antiquity. The Venetians built the port, the arsenals and the fortifications, and the Ottoman period left the minarets and mosque of the Janissaries on the waterfront. The cross-shaped municipal market hall is another clear landmark. To the east lies the Akrotiri peninsula, and to the south the White Mountains.
