Chanthaburi lies in eastern Thailand, not far from the Gulf of Thailand and the Cambodian border. On the map, the Chanthaburi River bends through the town, and the historic Chanthaboon waterfront follows its western bank as a long, narrow strip of shophouses. Newer districts spread west in a looser grid, with parks and open water near the centre.
The town is famous as a centre of the gem trade, and its weekend gem market draws dealers from across Asia. Across the river from the old quarter stands the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the largest Catholic church in Thailand, built by a community with roots among Vietnamese Catholics. The surrounding province is known for its durian and other fruit orchards.
